Coffee or Tea ?

I was born and raised in the great Indian plains, adjoining the footsteps of Himalayas in North India. I was never an avid traveler but my dreams knew no boundaries. Dreams, that fed my unquenchable hungert to see more of this beautiful world. Restless evenings staring at the lowering Sun and numerous nights looking up at the immense sky full with stars, those sleepless nights brought me to Canada. But it is not the end. I shall endure more journeys.

Tea was my natural drink of choice. My grandpa introduced my to the world of tea (chai) when I was merely 8 years old. A disciplined man all his life, he still himself prepares his early morning tea, the first thing of the day at 5 am sharp. Lipton Yellow tea. I still remember its aromatic taste and the right proportions of milk, water, fennel seeds and sugar. He abhorred black tea. “Never drink tea without milk. It is no good”, he used to tell me. It didn’t suit his taste and personality. However, my mother is an avid black tea drinker. Her turn to prepare came at 7. Darker and denser with milk, her tea lacked aromatic herbs but is what keeps her active and keep going for the rest of the day.

I was the only third member of the family who prepared tea. Everyone else including my siblings, father and grandma, were content with being served warm tea at their request. I inherited much from grandpa who I share fond memories with and from mom.

I will be vague in my answer about choosing between tea and coffee. I have been raised as a tea (chai) lover. I never tasted genuine coffee until I was 26 years old. Such was the blind love but twenty six years of relationship with tea is slowly fading away. I am having an affair with coffee at work these days. Since good tea is hard to find near work, or in the whole Canada to be frank. Canadians think that tea means the dip tea without milk and have no idea about the concept of herbs and Chai.

A man is a product of his circumstances. I am moving closer to coffee gradually. Tea wont get a divorce in the mean time but it is fun to relish both at different times and places. You may call this a secret of mine or adultery!
